Legislative leaders and the governor met this week to begin work on a permanent budget solution. Governor Craig Benson vetoed the legislature's budget plan last month and called for more cuts. Last week, the House failed to override that veto. On Wednesday, members of the house and senate met with the Governor to find out where he'd like to make changes. When it came to cuts - the governor was most specific about the state university system.

Benson: tape 1 09:20:22 I've also taken a look at university system salaries. Let me say there's 80 or 90 people that make more than the prior governor of this state makes. This current governor makes nothing so everybody makes more than me, but the fact of the matter is, there are pages of people that make well over $100,000 a year.
Green - tape 2 09:55:10 If you don't like the way they operate, there's an arena for that - but we do not spend large amounts of money on the University of NH. That's the bottom line. If we were doing that, we'd be having a different discussion. But when you start attacking a place because there's convenient money there - that's about it amounts to - I just think there's a real problem in terms of your committment to higher education in NH.
Benson: tape 2 09:56:09 When you're trying to make tradeoffs on where the dollar can go a little more effectively, and you see some things that are out of whack with what you think is the norm, it tends to jade your judgement and in this case it has jaded my judgement, I'll be exactly honest with you - to see large administrative salaries not helping the kids.

Democrats say they're outraged that President Bush used inaccurate information in his State of the Union Speech to justify war with Iraq.
The White House acknowledges the information was wrong, but is blaming US intelligence for clearing reports that Iraq was looking to buy nuclear material from Africa.
Democratic Presidential candidates Joe Lieberman and Howard Dean are calling for an independent probe. Dean is even calling for the resignations of those responsible for providing the president with misleading information.
Here's what Dean had to say while campaigning in New Hampshire late last month.

"We need an independant investigation into what went on to find out what the president knew and when he knew it.. because our international credibility is at stake. Either our intelligence services are terrible - or the President's advisors withheld information from the President. - or the President knew much more than he was saying and he did not tell the truth to the American people."

It's been over a week since the president of the New Hampshire Community Technical College at Berlin/Laconia was removed from her job. And not everyone is happy about the board of trustees' decision to remove Karen Grosz. Jeff, you've been following the story - some upset people in Berlin.
